Obscura

A dynamic coffee table

Team Member: Aaron Lin

This is a self-directed thesis project for my undergraduate degree at Emily Carr University of Art + Design. This project started as a way to tackle the issue of fast furniture by shifting the perceived value of modern furniture towards embracing emotional aspects.

Obscura is a tool that helps others discover values of furniture design through engaging in the process of my exploration as well as allowing them to compose their own “photographs.”

For this project, one major question is how people perceive value of physical objects. The reason why there are tons of furniture being thrown out is because the perceived value is solely based on superficial aspects rather than emotional. As a photographer and industrial designer, I wanted to explore the connection between photography and furniture design, and elevate the experience of owning a piece of furniture.

What does OBSCURA mean?

It means a darkened enclosure in which images of outside objects are projected through a small aperture or lens onto a facing surface. The images that are projected onto the surface are upside down and that’s the basic idea of how cameras work. I wanted to play around with this idea of bringing something from the outside world to the indoor space.

COFFEE TABLE

After ideating with 2D and 3D sketches, I was drawn into the idea of movement. Most furniture we see is always in a fixed position, by providing a sense of dynamics into the pieces, it gives the furniture more interactivity.
